Queen Mother's Maternity Hospital to Close

PRESS RELEASE: 7/10/03 - Sandra White MSP

SNP MSP for Glasgow Ms Sandra White has today (Tuesday) condemned Greater Glasgow NHS Board over its proposals to close the Queen Mother’s Maternity Hospital in the West End of the City. Commenting Ms White said;

“I have been involved in this process from the very beginning. I have aired my concerns with the Health Board and many Health professionals because this decision will do nothing more than put the future health of mothers and babies from the West and North of the City in jeopardy.

“There are many concerns to be addressed apart from the Health issues involved, including transportation of patients and the future of Yorkhill Hospital.

“Most people realise travelling from North to South through the Clyde Tunnel can be almost impossible and if you have a distressed pregnant woman attempting to get to the Southern General from the West or North of the City this could be a life threatening situation.

“The future of Yorkhill Hospital is now also under threat after this decision. I have been calling for the retention of Yorkhill for years, but it is clear that today’s decision recommends long term relocation to the Southern General which could mean that my fears for Yorkhill have been realised.

“I would urge my Glasgow Parliamentary colleagues of all political parties to oppose this outrageous recommendation.”
