We Stand for Students

I write to you as prospective candidate for the Scottish National Party in Glasgow Kelvin for the forthcoming General Election. As a former student of the University of Glasgow and a current postgraduate at Strathclyde University, I have a vested interest in student issues. Like those in the current Labour / Liberal Democrat Government, I have benefited from free education and full grants. Unlike them, I do not believe in treacherously pulling up the ladder of opportunity behind me. A vote for me and the SNP will ensure that we will strive to abolish fees and fight for free education.

We Stand for Free Education: Tuition fees are not dead, the Labour/Lib Dem Government have just changed their name to the Graduate Endowment in a cynical con.

We Stand for Grants: It is wholly unacceptable that many students live in poverty or are forced to work during term time just to pay their rent. The SNP would abolish the Student Loans Company and reinstate the maintenance grant to pre-1990 levels to ensure students are able to concentrate on their studies.

We stand for the re-introduction of Benefit Entitlement: Labour have continued the Tory policy of refusing to give you benefits like any other member of society. Our MP's will push for the early re-introduction of full- time students' right to access benefits.

Our key policy of Independence will allow us to: alleviate poverty, provide for our sick and elderly, develop a stable economic climate and remove the Trident weapons of mass destruction from Scottish waters.

Only your vote for the SNP can ensure a future for our nation.

The General Election has been called for June 7th. Although you may not still be staying on campus then, you are still entitled to vote in Glasgow. I have enclosed an application form for you to apply for a postal vote. Please fill it in and return it to the address on the form to ensure you do not miss out on your democratic right to vote.
