PRESS RELEASE from SANDRA WHITE MSP

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 6/10/2000

SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT MOTION CALLS FOR THE RESIGNATION OF GLASGOW UNIVERSITY RECTOR

A motion has been lodged (text below) at the Scottish Parliament by Sandra White MSP calling for the resignation of Glasgow University Rector former Eastenders star Mr Ross Kemp.

Students on the campus have been raising concerns that Mr Kemp has not been fulfilling his Rectorial duties. They have complained that Mr Kemp has attended only 3 out of 6 senate meetings, has failed to hold surgeries as promised prior to his election and for two successive years has not turned up to give the freshers address one of the key duties of the Rector. Many claim that Mr Kemp has in fact been seldom seen since his election.

Commenting on the motion Sandra White said “as candidate for Glasgow Kelvin, which contains the university campus, in two elections, I worked closely with students at Glasgow University and attended many meetings on campus. I believe they deserve the best possible representation and they should have a Rector who is available to and who will work for them”

“ The post of Rector carries considerable responsibility as he is the directly elected representative of the students. It would seem that Mr Kemp has failed in his duty to serve the students of Glasgow University”

Motion
That the Parliament agrees that the position of Rector of Glasgow University is one that carries considerable responsibility as well as bestowing honour and dignity upon the holder of the post. Parliament notes with concern the views of many students of Glasgow University who are calling for the resignation of the current Rector Mr Ross Kemp, as he has failed in many of his Rectorial duties, including failing to give the freshers address in two successive years and to hold surgeries as promised. Parliament therefore supports the students of Glasgow University and calls for his immediate resignation as Rector.
