Since May 1999, the people of Scotland have been served by 129 MSPs in the devolved Scottish Parliament. This "interim" Parliament was the first democratically elected body of its kind in Scotland for 293 years, and forms an important stepping stone on our inevitable road to Independence. The devolved assembly has legislative power over a range of matters, including health, education, local government, housing, law, economic and industrial development and the environment. But many matters have been reserved to the Westminster Parliament, such as social security, taxation, foreign policy and defence. While it can be said that the "Parliament" has been of great benefit to the Scottish people so far, the restrictions on its powers have hampered the progress of Scottish democracy. Only with an Independent Scottish Parliament can we have control over our own affairs and provide properly for our own people.
The current composition of the assembly is as follows:
| Party | MSPs |
Allegiance |
| Scottish New Labour | 50 |
| Scottish National Party | 27 |
| Scottish Conservative & Unionist Party | 18 |
| Scottish Liberal Democrats | 17 |
| Scottish Green Party | 7 |
| Scottish Socialist Party | 6 |
| Scottish Scenior Citizens Unity Party | 1 |
| Dennis Canavan (Independent) | 1 |
| Margo Macdonald (Independent) | 1 |
| Jean Turner (Independent) | 1 |
As can be seen above, many of our MSPs represent parties who support Scottish Independence, a reflection of the growing support for self government within the electorate.
Glasgow is served by two SNP MSPs: Sandra White and Nicola Sturgeon. They were both elected by the "top-up vote" under the additional member system of voting, and as such represent the whole of Glasgow and not any individual constituency in particular.
Responsibility for the north of the city is undertaken by Sandra White MSP. If you have any matters you wish to contact her about, please email her.
